English Writing
At Greenside, we believe that writing should be meaningful, creative and accessible for all pupils. Our writing curriculum is built around the Power of Reading approach, which uses high-quality, diverse texts to inspire thoughtful and purposeful writing. Through immersion in rich narratives and carefully chosen stimuli, including film and drama, pupils are encouraged to develop authentic responses and explore a broad range of genres and styles.
We place a strong emphasis on the writing process. Pupils are explicitly taught how to plan, draft, revise and improve their writing. Editing is embedded into every unit, with a focus on developing independent writers who can identify errors, refine their work and take pride in their progress. Grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives are taught both discretely and in context, ensuring that children can apply key skills with accuracy and confidence.
Presentation is a key priority. We follow the Nelson Handwriting programme across the school, supporting pupils to develop a clear, joined and fluent handwriting style by the time they transition to secondary school. Pride in written work is consistently reinforced through high expectations and strong modelling.
We are committed to ensuring that all learners, including those with SEND, access a high-quality writing curriculum. Adaptations are made to meet individual needs while maintaining challenge and ambition. Our approach promotes independence, self-expression and a strong sense of ownership over writing, preparing all pupils for successful written communication in school and beyond.
